Breast Implant Revision

Breast Implant Revision in New Orleans

Breast implant revision surgery is one of the fastest-growing areas of plastic surgery as the number of patients with breast implants grows each year.

Unfortunately, breast implants are not lifetime devices, and these devices will require a second surgery for removal and replacement when the device fails or other complications.

Depending on the primary reason for implant revision surgery, this procedure can be very challenging when compared to a primary breast augmentation. Dr. Hendrick has extensive experience performing breast implant revisions. He will spend time with you during your consultation to hear your concerns about the appearance of your breasts and how you would like them to look. He will then help you choose the correct treatment plan for your individual problem. He will discuss any issues that may be encountered during the surgery or in the post-operative phase. He will answer any questions or concerns that you might have and offer a clear understanding to avoid unrealistic expectations.

Candidates for Breast Revision Surgery

Patients seeking out breast implant revision might be experiencing one of the following problems:

  • Implant rupture or Capsular contracture
  • Symmastia (as known as uni-boob) or implant misplacement
  • Rippling or wrinkling
  • Unsatisfactory size

What Can Breast Implant Revision Surgery Accomplish?

  • Removal of a failed implant with replacement
  • Change in size of an implant
  • Correct implant misplacement or symmastia
  • Removal of capsular contractures
  • Alleviate rippling or wrinkling
  • Boost self-esteem and confidence

What Happens During Breast Implant Revision Surgery?

Each breast revision surgery is specifically tailored to the patients’ problem and needs; therefore, the treatment plan will differ from patient to patient. During your initial consultation, Dr. Hendrick will look at your individual problem and develop an individualized treatment plan. Dr. Hendrick performs his breast implant revision procedures under general anesthesia. Incisions are typically placed through the previous scar. Dr. Hendrick then removes the old implant and possibly the capsule surrounding the implant. Dr. Hendrick may be required to reshape the breast pocket for better positioning of the new implant. In some cases, it may be recommended to remove the implant temporarily to allow healing of the previous breast pocket with the placement of a new implant after several weeks. After the new implant is placed the incisions are sutured closed, bandages are applied followed by a surgical bra to maintain the position of the new implants.

At age 63 I really didn’t think I wanted to have my 25 year old implants replaced even though they had become hardened and did not look natural. Replacing them with the new and improved implants made a huge difference. My breasts are now soft and more natural looking. I have the confidence to show some cleavage again! Don’t wait as long as I did to get an “upgrade”! So glad I did it! Updated on 29 Mar 2016: Had major capsular contraction of 350 cc silicone implants which had ruptured. Replaced with new improved silicone 400 cc. Pocket had to be reconstructed due expanded silicone. Drain tubes were necessary due to the amount of reconstruction for 10 days. That was a real pain but I trusted Dr. Hendrick to know what was best – and he was right. There is a loss of sensation, especially around the nipple but the new breasts are soft and more natural. – Sherryncook

What can I expect during recovery?

Post-operatively, you should expect to experience some tightness, swelling, bruising, and soreness after a revision surgery. These symptoms will gradually subside in the weeks following your surgery. You will be prescribed pain medication to help with any discomfort you experience. You will be fitted with a surgical bra after your surgery, which you must wear for several weeks.

Incisions are cared for each day by cleansing the incision lines with mild soap and water, and any external stitches will be removed during a post-operative examination. Most patients take seven to ten days off from work after surgery. Exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for six to eight weeks. Be sure to always discuss activity restrictions with Dr. Hendrick to avoid any complication after surgery.

A full set of post-operative instructions will be provided to you prior to your surgery and feel free to ask any questions during your preoperative visit.

Breast implant revision surgery is typically not covered under insurance plans because it is considered a cosmetic procedure. However, some cases of severe capsular contracture may be covered by insurance. Dr. Hendrick’s staff will be glad to assist with any pre-verification with your insurance company.
