TCA Chemical Peel/VI Peel in New Orleans
TCA chemical peels utilize varying concentrations of trichloroacetic acid (TCA). A TCA peel is considered superficial to medium in depth, differing from superficial chemical peels (such as salicylic or glycolic acid) and deep chemical peels (such as phenol).
A chemical peel involves the careful application of a scientifically formulated solution to the skin, which causes the top layers to separate and shed, removing sun-damaged and wrinkled skin. TCA chemical peeling is an art that requires extensive experience in selecting the appropriate concentration, determining the amount applied to each area of the face, and applying it with precision. Dr. Velargo has co-authored numerous internationally published articles and book chapters on innovative approaches to chemical peeling and can customize your treatment based on your skin type, condition, and goals.
Most people require a series of TCA peels to achieve optimal results. These results are further enhanced when combined with a medical-grade skincare regimen, such as FaceMD, under Dr. Velargo’s guidance. Dr. Velargo has also published literature on a novel technique called “Enhanced Superficial Chemical Peeling,” which often produces results comparable to deeper skin resurfacing methods, such as laser or phenol peeling.

What Can a TCA Peel Accomplish?
A TCA Peel can:
- Smooth rough and “leathery” skin
- Smooth fine lines and wrinkles
- Brighten the skin, lightening hyperpigmentation, brown spots, and sun damage
- Improve acne scars and blemishes
- Stimulate natural collagen production for an overall enhancement of the skin
What Happens During a TCA Peel?
TCA peels are performed in the outpatient procedure room at our clinic. The TCA solution is applied to the face in a methodical yet customized manner. The solution may sting during application, but this sensation is brief, lasting only a few seconds. A cooling device is used to help ease discomfort. Any subsequent burning is typically mild, similar to a sunburn, and can be managed with appropriate medications.
Depending on your skin type and the number of previous treatments you have had, Dr. Velargo adjusts both the concentration of TCA and the method of application.
VI Peel in New Orleans
VI Peels are a safe and effective approach to achieving younger-looking skin and provide superior results for all Fitzpatrick skin types. Two to four VI Peels per year, combined with proper home care, can reverse sun damage and treat hyperpigmentation—including melasma—acne and acne scarring, aging skin, and rosacea. Patients of all ages can benefit from these treatments, from preteen acne sufferers to mature patients seeking to reverse the signs of aging.
Unlike other chemical peels, our treatments are virtually painless, require no skin preconditioning, and have minimal downtime. The peels are suitable for both the face and body. VI Peels are practical, affordable, and deliver noticeable results within one week.
The VI Peel® is composed of five rejuvenating acids: TCA, Retin-A (to trigger peeling, unclog pores, and boost collagen and elastin), Salicylic Acid, Phenol, and Vitamin C (a powerful antioxidant that mitigates UV damage and removes toxins).
This unique treatment is designed to reverse early signs of aging and sun damage with minimal downtime. Within about a week, patients will notice improved skin texture and tone, smaller pores, and a significant reduction in areas of hyperpigmentation.
The VI Peel® gently removes the top layer of dead skin, revealing newer, healthier skin for a brighter, firmer, and more youthful appearance. It also stimulates the body’s natural collagen production, further plumping and smoothing the skin. VI Peels are safe for use on the face, neck, hands, and body.

FAQs: TCA Peel & VI Peel in New Orleans
What can I expect during recovery from a TCA Peel?
You can expect to have pink, flaky skin for about 1–3 days following the TCA peel. Generally, this is mild and can be easily camouflaged with makeup about two days post-peel.
Depending on your skin condition and desired outcome, a series of peels spaced 4–6 weeks apart may provide superior results.
What are the benefits of a VI Peel?
- The treatment is relatively pain-free.
- Very little downtime required afterward.
- Patients can immediately return to their daily activities.
- Safe and effective on all skin types, including darker tones.
- Gentle enough for the eyes, neck, chest, and hands.
- Beautiful results can be seen in as little as one week.
Who is the ideal candidate for a VI Peel?
VI Peels are considered safe for all skin types and ethnicities, making them an excellent choice for anyone looking to significantly improve their complexion. Both men and women dealing with acne, acne scarring, fine lines or wrinkles, and sunspots can benefit from this ‘light’ chemical peel. The ideal candidate is generally in good health and has realistic expectations for the procedure.
What is the recovery like after a VI Peel?
After four hours, patients wash the VI Peel® from their face. The skin may appear red and mildly swollen, which is normal and typically resolves within the first 24 hours. There is no required downtime after a VI Peel®—patients can return to work, school, and most normal activities immediately. However, vigorous exercise should be avoided for the first 24–48 hours.
Two to three days after the VI Peel® application, the skin will begin to peel, usually starting around the mouth area. This process can last three to seven days, depending on the patient’s skin type and condition. Moisturizer may be used during this time to improve the appearance of peeling. It’s also important to apply a sunscreen of at least SPF 30 daily. Once peeling is complete, patients will notice a smoother, healthier complexion.
